How to change steering wheel
Been meaning to write this guide up for ages, anyway I'm writing this up to explain to you how to change your steering wheel. I changed my mk2a basic steering wheel to a mk2b sporting steering wheel :D Feels alot nicer haha!
Things you will need:
Allen keys (Forget which size, so bring a whole set)
24mm socket
Socket wrench
Small flat jeweller's screwdriver
Normal sized flat screwdriver
Patience (The 3 allen keys are annoying and leverage was what p#ssed me off)
Time:
This should take you 5-15mins, the guy at the scrappy had the wheel off in under 2mins. It took me an hour though, I couldn't get the last allen key off for the airbag and it turned out I was turning the wrong way the whole time.
General description of what you've got to do, to fit the wheel, the wheel needs to come off. Duh! This is done by first taking the airbag off, then undoing a 24mm bolt connected to the steering coloumn.
Step 1:
Disconnect your battery and leave for an hour, then come back to your car and begin the process. You don't have to leave it for an hour, it's just what I did to be on the safe side. Reason for this is the airbag, I didn't want it blowing up in my face.
* Make sure your steering wheel is STRAIGHT! I did mine upside down but I fitted the new steering wheel upside down to avoid confusion.
Step 2: You need to undo the 3 allen keys holding the air bag onto the wheel, these are located behind the steering wheel, you can feel where the holes are with your fingers. You need to just feel around with the allen key until you know you've got it in properly, its very very fiddly as you'll find out.
* 2 of the allen keys will turn one way to come undone, one other turns the other way to come lose, this is because one is upside down I think. I found this out the hard way.
** The guy at the scrappy told me the best way to get leverage to undo the allen keys is to undo it when it is facing the windscreen, this means turning the wheel to undo each one. I found this hard though because I was on a hill and there was a van infront of me, so I could only roll the car forward to much to turn the wheel and had no battery, so couldn't reverse back hence why I ended up fitting mine upside down.
Step 3: Gently take off the airbag and prise off the green airbag connecter with a flat screwdriver. Be gentle when doing this, just slot the screwdriver down the side and turn it 90 degree's and the connected will unclip off.
Step 4: Disconnect the horn connector, this is the white thing on the bottom left side, to disconnect you need to push on the right hand side and it will SLIDE out.
* Make sure you get the 3 allen keys aswell to fit the new wheel on, you may have these anyway from your new wheel.
Step 5: Remove the plastic cover cap over the 24mm nut, leave this on your dash to refit it. Turn anticlockwise on this nut and off it will come. Rock your wheel from side to side and it will slide off.
Repeat the steps to get the airbag off on your new wheel, then pop the wheel onto the coloumn and put the 24mm nut back on and screw on. Turn clockwise to tighten, then place the plastic cover back on.
Step 6: First connect the green airbag connector to the airbag, it will simply clip back on. Hold the airbag in one hand and connect with the other.
Step 7: You now need to connect the horn connector back up this bit was annoying, and is why you need a small flat jeweller's screwdriver, the horn connector won't sldie back on. You need to get the screwdriver and prise the 2 small silver connector to the right a bit more so they can slide back onto the connector properly. You'll know what I mean when you do this. If you don't do this, the connector won't go in properly as the 2 silver connectors aren't alligned right for the white plastic thing to go over them properly.
Step 8: Once you've connected the airbag connector and horn to the airbag unit, push it back into the wheel assembly and simply but back on the 3 allen keys and it's job done.
Step 9: Admire your new leather wheel :D
*PICS SOON*
