Posted: 12/02/2011 21:56 Post subject: Guide: HGT - Fitting a Catch Tank |
|
|
Due to some people asking for pics on how I fit mine I thought I'd just put a little guide together. Might not be as useful for people without GSR Induction but still gives a good idea of how you could do it.
The pictures were taken of the finished setup, not of the WIP but they should be relatively easy to work from.
You will need...
Tools - for removing battery/tightening hose clips
Drill - drilling holes into battery casing
Hacksaw - removing some of battery casing
Stanley Knife
10mm->10mm Hose/pipe Joiner - used a copper one from B&Q/Plumbing
Cable Tie
Catch tank - I bought a black one, exactly the same as this...
Mine came with twice the number of hose clips, bracket/bolts and a piece of (useless/ugly) hose. These kits can be found on eBay with a quick search, theres a few different coloured tanks available.
Hose - I got 9.5mm 3/8", bought from here
Probably cheaper places online, even better if you know somewhere local to you that sells the stuff. 1.5 metres should cover it easily with some spare.
Fitting...
Firstly, attach the smaller pair of pipe fittings to the top of the catch tank. The others are too large for the 9.5mm piping.
Get under the bonnet and unclip the GSR kit from throttle body (cover the intake) and move it over to give you a bit more room. Then remove the battery.
Take out the battery tray. Find a drillbit that will give a nice snug fit for the catch tank fitting bolts. After a bit of lining up/measuring/marking/drilling you should have the catch tank fitted onto the tray. In this position it clears the GSR and bonnet release cable.
Refit the tray to the car. Remove the original breather hose from the rocker cover and 2 parts on the throttle body and take it out of the engine bay.
Next you are going to join the autentic breather hose from where it was attached to the rocker cover, to your fresh new hose so that you can still use the section where it splits into two hoses and attaches to both parts of the throttle body.
Grab you 10mm->10mm joiner and knife. Join the two parts together as I have done in the pictures below. I cut a section off the rocker cover end of the original piping (can't 100% remember why but I think there was just a wider section of pipe on the end). If you place the ends of pipe into freshly boiled water it will make it a lot easier to get onto the 10mm->10mm joiner into the pipe. When you've done this put a couple of hose clips on to make sure the pipe isn't going anywhere.
Refit the piping to the throttle body. You should now have the original 2 way piping joined to the throttle body, which is connected to a length of your new pipe, which now needs to go onto the catch tank.
Work out roughly what length of pipe you need to fit it to the catch tank (give yourself a bit extra as well, you can always cut it down to size later).
Cut down and fit, then make yourself a rocker cover -> catch tank piece and get it all fitted together as shown below. It is a good idea to refit you GSR to make sure the pipes are not fouling against it. Once again boiling water can help get the hoses on.
Next is to get the pipes fitting flush against the battery casing (you may have noticed that they are fouling on the vertical strip that juts out).
Mark out the top and bottom of where the piping sits on the vertical stip of plastic, remove the battery casing again and then cut that section away with the hacksaw. Drill two holes, top and bottom of the section that you have just cut out.
Refit the battery tray, get the pipes into position and wrap a cable tie round them, going through the holes that you have just drilled.
Refit the battery (cables that sat where the catch tank are now can be run up the fuse box side) and induction, make sure everythings connected up properly and your done.

Emptying...
I had a go at emptying the tank today as the level was nearing halfway. It has been on for around 8 months.
I Moved the induction hose over, removed battery and unscrewed the catch tank from battery casing (being careful not to tilt the tank too much whilst moving it). I then got an old measuring jug and put it in the gap where the catch tank normally sits, held the tank inside the jug and unscrewed the drain plug. This is what came out...
After wiping the bottom of the tank clean everything was replaced and the waste poured into an old Selenia tub. |
