Guide: Changing To Uprated Brake Hoses

Changed my brake hoses today for some braided hoses and decided to write up a guide, its not the best of guides and halfway through I forgot to take pictures so I’ll explain the best I can with the pictures I have. Also if there is anything wrong with my method then I hope one of the more experienced members will amend it.

What you will need:

- Uprated Brake Hoses
- Several Spanners (11mm, 14mm, 17mm Off Top Of My Head)
- Small Flat Head Screwdriver
- Pliers
- Jack & Axel Stands
- Brake Fluid (Dot 4)
- Gloves
- Container (To Catch Brake Fluid)
- Cable Ties (Black Is Pro, I Only Had Blue)
- Somebody To Pump Brake Pedal (When Bleeding System)

To start off with, check the brake fluid level, you’ll want to keep an eye on this whilst you’re changing the hoses as you don’t want it to run dry and mess up your master cylinder etc.

Jack the car up and whack it on axel stands, if you don’t know how to do this then don’t even bother trying to fit hoses you will kill yourself.

I chose to go with the NBM Woolford hoses, its recommended that you go for the hoses with Stainless Steel ends, but mine were cheaper than normal so it was rude not to:

The part you will be changing will be in-between the red circles, but first you have to remove it from its fixings marked in green:

To remove the middle fat one I just levered it out gently with a screwdriver then pulled it, it shouldn’t be hard to remove just give it a tug. The top fixing can be a pain in the arse. I used a screwdriver and a hammer to knock some of the shit off of it to make it easier to see what needs to come off, like so:

After loosening it I just used to pliers to pull out the clip which I’ve highlighted in red, this frees up the nut that’s being held in place and means you can pull it downwards so you can undo it. Don’t lose this C clip:

Next get your 11mm and 17mm spanners and loosen the bolts highlighted in green (11mm on top, 17mm bottom):

And then use your 14mm spanner to loosen the bolt which connects the bottom of the hose to the caliper.

After this I put the bucket underneath where the hose is as brake fluid will drip out slowly and come out of the old hose, then just unscrewed the old hose, dumped it in the bucket and quickly put the new uprated hose in place of the old one:

I couldn’t get the rubber fixings off the old hose so instead I used the clip that came with the hose to protect it from rubbing on metal, the cable tied it to the where that fat rubber fixing was:

Now repeat the same process for the other side, once that is done you will need to bleed the brakes, due to a lot of air now being in the system.

Before you bleed the brakes check the fluid level again, and keep your eye on it during this and you will lose a bit of fluid bleeding them. Bleeding the brakes is relatively simple. It’s best to start by bleeding the caliper furthest away from the master cylinder, I know why you have to but can’t put it into words for some stupid reason, just do it.

To bleed the system you’ll need your extra person. You need to do this using the bleed nipple:

Undo the nipple slightly until fluid starts to drip out, now get your mate to very slowly pump the brake pedal whilst you watch for air coming out of the system, you’ll need to pump it until you only see a solid line of liquid coming from the nipple, then tighten the nipple whilst your mate is pumping the pedal. Then do the same for the otherside. Take it for a drive to make sure it is bled properly, there shouldn’t be any “spongeyness” in the pedal, if so repeat until you have bled it properly

Then just enjoy.

Edit: After putting this up i've noticed the "red circles" in the pictures aren't very visible, so look hard I cba to do it again
